Why Spore-Formers Survive the Stomach

Classical probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium lose up to 99% of their viability on the way through the stomach. Bacillus subtilis MM40®, as a natural spore-former, withstands gastric acid, heat and storage without refrigeration.

Natural Spore Form

As a gram-positive spore-former, B. subtilis MM40® forms resistant endospores that withstand gastric acid, heat and storage without refrigeration for up to 2 years.

Surfactin Production

The strain is capable of producing surfactin - a cyclic lipopeptide with surface-active properties that is described in research as a subject of intensive investigation.

Genomically Characterized

Fully sequenced and deposited at the DSMZ as MM40® (DSM 33619). Identity confirmed by CeGaT laboratory analysis, EU patent granted.

Strain Designation MM40®

All three designations refer to the same bacterial strain. Genetic identity was confirmed by Whole-Genome Sequencing (CeGaT GmbH, 27.01.2022): DSM 21097 and DSM 33619 are genetically identical.

Individual Deposit

DSM 21097

Individual deposit number at the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ) in Braunschweig. The original scientific reference number of the strain.

International Patent Deposit

DSM 33619

International patent deposit under the Budapest Treaty (20.08.2020). This number secures the patent protection of the strain and is the basis for the granted EU patent EP 3 964 195.

Registered EU Word Mark

Bacillus subtilis MM40

Registered EU word mark No. 018279328 (registered 27.02.2021). Nice classes 1, 5, 32 - the commercial brand name for scientific publications and the B2B market.

Six Investigated Application Fields

Research and application fields in which the strain has been investigated so far.

Metabolism & Metabolic Health

In a placebo-controlled, randomised study with 70 participants, changes in metabolic parameters were investigated and documented over 12 weeks.

Gut & Microbiome

The study showed shifts in the composition of participants’ gut flora, particularly in Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratios and specific gut barrier markers.

Antimicrobial Properties

In vitro investigations at UKSH Lübeck showed inhibition zones against selected reference strains. These results serve as a basis for further research.

Immunomodulation

Spore-formers of the species B. subtilis are the subject of extensive immunological research. The interaction with GALT (Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue) is described in the scientific literature.

Skin & Cosmetics

The antimicrobial and surface-active properties of surfactin are discussed in scientific publications as relevant for dermatological and cosmetic applications.

Anti-Aging & Longevity

The changes in specific biomarkers observed in the clinical study are associated in the scientific literature with aspects of biological aging.

Results of the Clinical Study

In a placebo-controlled, randomised study with 70 participants over 12 weeks, the following changes were observed in the verum group compared to the placebo group:

Note: the data come from a single-centre study (n = 70; microbiome sub-analysis n = 38). Further research is required. These are not authorised health claims under EU Regulation 1924/2006. Source: Vogel W, Minch S, Prydyus I, Kryzhanovska N, 2026.

MCT Technology

The patented MCT oil-silicon encapsulation technology (EU Patent EP3964195) protects strain MM40® and enables controlled release in the gut. This keeps the strain storable without refrigeration, even in warm climates.
